An Afternoon of “Holy Jazz†with the Lyric Consort and the Presbybop Quartet
This Sunday afternoon, May 4, at 3:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, the Lyric Consort, NEPA’s critically acclaimed professional vocal ensemble, will close its concert season with a program of “Holy Jazz.†The Consort will collaborate with the Presbybop Quartet in a program exploring the intersection of sacred and musical idioms. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door.
The program will include regional premieres of two important works recently created to blend jazz with the sacred choral traditions of the Renaissance and Middle Ages. The first is a Brian Barlow jazz setting of William Byrd’s great “Mass for Four Voices†as well as a series of jazz quartet “reflections†on that work’s various musical themes. The second premiere will present a number of Gregorian Chants as they have been re-imagined by Kansas City trumpeter Stan Kessler.
Also included on the program is Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday,†sacred music of the Renaissance maverick Gesualdo and 16th century composer Cristobal de Morales, and a few musical surprises!
